“He was a mogul and a saint,” said co-founder and CEO Owen Beck, who split his time between New York and Australia. “I don’t think you could be more in two places at the same time.”
He was a witness to the digital age in the early 2000s, and the man who steered Gilt through its final days in an effort to rescue it from oblivion. For Gilt, which was once among the world’s most powerful brick-and-mortar retailers, Marty helped develop e-commerce into a viable alternative to the traditional retail experience, and in the process he built Gilt into one of the most profitable businesses in the country.
“Marty thought about business in a lot of different ways,” said Beck. “He had an incredible knack for seeing trends before they started.”
He spent the first part of his career peddling books, and in 1997 he started writing a book series about Shakespeare that were based on the Bard’s most famous plays.
